HYDROGEN & GROUP IVA ELEMENTS

HYDROGEN & GROUP IVA ELEMENTS Study In USA || Top Universities in Alabama 2021 || Alabama University Ranking

HYDROGEN & GROUP IVA ELEMENTS

Similarities

1.      Valence shell of hydrogen is half filled like group IV-A elements.
2.      Both hydrogen & Group IV members combine with other elements through covalent bonds.
3.      Like carbon, hydrogen has strong reducing properties.
                                e.g.                CuO + H2 Cu + H2
                                                      SnO2 + C Sn + CO2

Differences

1.      Hydrogen has just one electron in its outermost shell while group IV-A elements have four electrons.
2.      Hydrogen is a gas while members of group IV are solid
3.      Hydrogen exist in diatomic form while members of group IV do not exist in diatomic form.
4.      Group IV A elements e.g. C and Si has property of catenation i.e. form long chain compounds while hydrogen do not form such compounds.

5.      Group IV A elements e.g C can combine with more than one elements at a time. But hydrogen due to just one electron combine with only one element at a time.
